Bronx Man Arrested After Allegedly Throwing Mother and Infant From 15th-Floor Balcony

New York City police have arrested a 31-year-old man after a manhunt for the person allegedly responsible for pushing a woman to her death from a 15th-floor balcony while she was holding her 8-month-old daughter.

The New York City Police Department tracked down Angel Carrasco late Wednesday, just hours after naming him the prime suspect in Nathaly Ramirez’s death. Investigators said Ramirez, a 23-year-old mother, was holding her daughter when someone shoved her from the balcony on Olinville Avenue, in the Allerton section of the Bronx, early Tuesday. Both plunged to the ground.

Ramirez was pronounced dead at a hospital. The baby girl was taken there as well and remained in critical condition as of Wednesday. Authorities believe her mother’s body may have cushioned her fall.

Officials said Carrasco was hiding at a friend’s house when police caught up to him. He faces charges of murder, attempted murder, manslaughter, attempted manslaughter and assault.

Police were reviewing surveillance video as part of their investigation. Police sources said the footage shows a man in a hooded sweatshirt walking away as officers responded to the scene.

Sources said Ramirez’s address had a history of domestic violence, and police wanted to question her ex-boyfriend after the deadly incident.

A witness who lives in the Allerville Arms apartment building said she heard yelling in the middle of the night. Then screams led people to find Ramirez’s body outside. A neighbor told NBC New York she heard the young woman pleading with someone before she and her baby plunged from the balcony.

“I heard her yelling and screaming, ‘Please don’t do this. My baby. You know my baby is scared. Look at her face,'” the neighbor said. “Next thing you know, I hear her scream, and I see something hit the ground.”

A high school classmate from the Bronx Leadership Academy stopped by the growing memorial and said he’ll remember the young mother as a kind person.

“She was always cool with everybody. She always talked to everybody,” he said. If Ramirez saw someone having a bad day, he said, she would “joke with them to life their day up.”
