A 35-year-old Taylor man was killed Thursday night after being struck by two vehicles while attempting to cross Van Born Road. The second driver fled the scene and has not been apprehended.
Chris Leslie was initially struck by an oncoming vehicle on Van Born Road. That driver came to a stop. Cpl Anthony Borg of the Taylor Police Department told 7 News Detroit what happened next.
Taylor Man, 35, was killed by two drivers on Van Born Road. The second driver left the scene and is not in jail. Approximately 20 to 30 seconds later, another car heading eastbound on Van Born ran over the body again. “That person did flee the scene of the accident,” Borg explained.
Police used surveillance cameras, including Flock cameras, to track down and speak with the second driver. Borg emphasised the use of technology in identifying vehicles. Without the use of Flock in this situation, we probably would not have been able to identify the licence plate on that vehicle and contact the driver,” Borg stated.
The driver has not been arrested. Police believe drugs or alcohol were involved with the first driver, but they are currently awaiting forensic testing results.
Aaron Baker, Leslie’s brother, expressed sadness upon learning about the incident. “I just lost it,” Baker explained.
John Curcio, a friend who had assisted Leslie through challenging times, stated that no one should have to die the way Leslie did. Nobody deserves to be slaughtered like this. “No one,” Curcio replied.
Curcio acknowledged Leslie’s struggles with homelessness and substance abuse and offered support throughout those times. “You don’t leave someone like that; it’s unacceptable,” Curcio remarked.
Curcio is assisting Leslie’s brother, who is also homeless, in their efforts to provide Chris’s dignified burial. That would mean a lot,” Baker explained.
Baker wants people to remember his brother for who he was, rather than his challenges. “He was funny, kind, and always made jokes,” Baker recalled.
Curcio encouraged the community to do more for those in need. We need to assist the people who are out on these corners. We have to do something. “Not leave them dead on the side of the road,” Curcio stated.
Nobody is in custody. Police said they’re still investigating what happened.
