West Philadelphia Ambush Kills One Officer, Leaves Another Fighting for Life After Being Shot 12 Times

A Philadelphia police officer died, and his partner remains in critical condition after an ambush and multiple gunshots while answering a disturbance call in West Philadelphia early Saturday morning.

The shooting unfolded just after midnight on the 100 block of North 52nd Street. Officers responded to reports of an armed individual, and, according to an on‑scene cop, the duo was immediately met with gunfire from a porch ambush.

Both officers were rushed to Penn Presbyterian Hospital. The fallen officer, identified as 40‑year‑old Shane Seiser, had served ten years with the department and was a father of two. He succumbed to three gunshot wounds. His 33‑year‑old partner, a father of five, was hit 12 times and remains in critical but stable condition.

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel confirmed the death outside the hospital. “We had an immense amount of hope,” Bethel said. “I’m grateful to the staff of Presbyterian. They worked valiantly, but fortunately his wife was able to be by his side before he passed, as well as his family.” He added, “This will be a period of mourning for us, but we will stand tall as a department and get through this together.”

Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker addressed the tragedy alongside police leadership. “Police Officer Shane Seiser paid the ultimate price while sacrificing his own life to protect and serve our city,” Parker said. “And while there is nothing that we can do to change the outcome of this heinous act of violence and a senseless tragedy, we can fight to make sure that we do everything that we can to prohibit our city, to stop our city from experiencing the kind of loss that we have experienced today.” Parker also announced plans to petition the Pennsylvania General Assembly to expand involuntary‑commitment laws.

After the porch shooting, the suspect fled down a nearby alley, fired at arriving backup officers, and then climbed a tree to hide. SWAT units surrounded the area, prompting the suspect to surrender without further gunfire. Police recovered three firearms tied to the incident: two handguns and a shotgun.

Bethel said investigators are still on the scene, and the suspect’s identity and specific charges will be released once processed through the district attorney’s office.
