A man’s concern for his mother-in-law helped deputies in apprehending a woman accused of scamming more than $60,000 from her elderly victim.
The Paulding County Sheriff’s Office said their investigation began on Oct. 7, when a man called 911 to report that he believed his mother-in-law was being scammed.
During the inquiry, investigators discovered that the scammers had convinced the victim that they were from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and requested gift cards, wire transfers, cash, and Bitcoin.
The accused were expecting the victim to drop over thousands of dollars in cash, which detectives discovered and reported to deputies. The suspects agreed on a time and location for the drop, and we promptly gathered in the area to apprehend the suspect,” the sheriff’s office told CBS News Atlanta.
The suspect, 58-year-old Zishan Zeng, faces two counts of elder abuse and two counts of theft by deceit. Investigators said the Duluth lady is now facing charges in Douglas County.
Zeng is currently detained in the Paulding County Jail without bond.
The investigation is underway.
