Kentucky Son Collects Benefits While Mother’s Body Lay Dead In Bed For 4 Months, Police Say

A 56-year-old man faces multiple criminal charges after concealing his mother’s death for approximately four months and stealing tens of thousands of dollars from her bank account, according to the Paintsville Police Department.

Authorities apprehended John Carroll on October 26 at a Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant.

Officers initially responded to a residence on October 19 to conduct a welfare check. Upon arrival, investigators spoke with a family member who reported that their cousin, John Carroll, had stated his mother died one week prior and remained in her bed.

Police identified the deceased woman as Patty Carroll. According to an arrest warrant obtained by local media, John Carroll had resided with her for approximately 10 years.

After obtaining search warrants, subpoenas, and financial and medical records, investigators determined that Patty Carroll had died approximately four months earlier , not one week prior as Carroll had reported to the family member.

Local news outlets reported that Patty Carroll’s remains appeared mummified and that John Carroll never reported her death to the authorities.

According to the arrest warrant, Carroll wrote himself 17 checks totaling more than $26,250 from his mother’s bank account during the four months following her death. Investigators alleged that Carroll routinely issued himself approximately $3,500 in checks following the automatic monthly deposit of her Social Security benefits.

Police confirmed that the investigation remains ongoing.
