BEND, Oregon – A Redmond man died and a woman was airlifted following a two-vehicle crash on Highway 26 near Sandy last week after authorities said the driver who struck them had fallen asleep at the wheel.
The crash occurred Thursday, April 30, at about 7:29 p.m. near milepost 28.
According to Oregon State Police, a Toyota Tacoma driven by 18-year-old Wyatt Branchley Beers of Whitefish, Montana, crossed into oncoming lanes after the driver fell asleep. The pickup then collided with a Subaru Outback driven by 45-year-old Sally Caitlin West of Redmond.
Christopher James Hamre, 42, a passenger in the Outback, died at the scene. OSP said West suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to a hospital.
Beers was not injured, police said. He stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
OSP did not say whether authorities cited Beers or what charges he could face.
