The man charged with the murder of a Loyola University student was captured in jail with a firearm, according to the Cook County Sheriff’s Office.
Jose Medina, 26, was charged with the murder of Sheridan Gorman, an 18-year-old former Loyola University student.
Medina is facing further charges after a Cook County Jail employee discovered a 6-inch shank in his possession on Thursday, according to officials. Correctional officers checked Medina’s clothing pockets and discovered a sharpened piece of metal with a handle attached with medical tape.
He is a Venezuelan national who came to the United States in 2023 after being detained at the US-Mexico border.
Sheridan was heading outside with a group of friends at 1:30 a.m. on March 19 when a masked male suspect, later identified as Medina, approached them and began firing at them on the pier at Tobey Prinz Beach, according to Chicago police and a Loyola campus safety advisory.
Sheridan was shot in the head and died on the spot.
Prosecutors said Medina was lurking nearby before stepping out and shooting at Gorman and her friends as they attempted to flee.
Investigators claimed video footage led them to Medina’s residence, where they found a gun wrapped in a ski mask beside his bed.
Medina has been in prison since March 23. His next court session is slated for Monday, following an earlier delay due to a TB diagnosis.
