A Chicago gang member who led Ogle County police on a reckless 100-mph pursuit on May 9 is currently in custody in Cook County, according to officials.

In an initial news release, the Ogle County Sheriff’s Office stated that Jesus Castillo, 34, was wanted for identity theft. According to police, Castillo stole a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee and escaped from pursuing officers.

At 9:32 a.m. on May 9, Ogle County deputies observed the Jeep heading southbound on IL RTE 251 and attempted to stop it near the intersection of E. Eddy Road, but Castillo fled at speeds above 100 mph, turning onto RTE 64. During the pursuit, Castillo drove southbound in the northbound lanes, crossing the grass median and passing through a work zone, according to authorities.

The pursuit proceeded into Rochelle city limits when deputies stopped due to safety concerns. The abandoned automobile was eventually discovered around 8th Street and 9th Avenue.

Police then issued an advisory to locals, urging them not to approach Castillo, who has a history of violent behavior, resisting arrest, and drug use.

At 1:25 p.m., police said that investigators had established Castillo had paid a neighbor to drive him to Rockford.

According to police, Castillo did not have a driver’s license and was wanted for violating his conditional release from jail.

On June 5th, the sheriff’s office announced that Castillo was in custody at the Cook County Jail on unrelated charges and will be extradited to Ogle County on accusations of possession of a stolen motor vehicle.
