A man is facing charges after five dogs were discovered abandoned for about a week at a Phoenix apartment complex, according to court documents released Thursday.
According to police, officers were on another call when someone called them down to report five dogs in crates outside an apartment at 40th Street and McDowell Road.
Officers located three dogs in one box, two in another, and one that appeared to be barely moving.
According to court documents, the dogs’ ribs were apparent due to a lack of food, and crusty feces covered both the kennels and the dogs.
The dogs were sent to a veterinary hospital. According to court documents, one of the dogs died and two others had major injuries.
Officers said they spoke with Andre Magee, 34, who told them the dogs belonged to him and his girlfriend. He said he knew his girlfriend was trying to contact the Arizona Humane Society and other shelters, but he was not participating in those calls.
Investigators then discovered that the dogs had been left alone in the flat for approximately a week without food or water.
Police said they received evidence that Magee was just evicted, but he said his girlfriend was evicted on June 9.
After being arrested, Magee modified his tale, claiming that the dogs were his girlfriend’s and that he went visiting the residence to retrieve her stuff. He admitted knowing the pets’ condition, according to police.
Magee was hauled into jail on three counts of animal cruelty: one felony and two misdemeanors.
Court filings state that he has a history of aggression against children and animals.
