The Chico Police Department is investigating a shooting that took place at the Chico branch of the Butte County Library, located near Sherman Avenue and East Third Avenue.
During a press conference, Chico Police Chief Billy Aldridge confirmed that two adults died and a child suffered injuries. Authorities said they received several 911 calls reporting gunfire and people screaming at around 5:12 p.m. Monday.
According to Chico Police, the shooting occurred inside the library and involved a single firearm. Officials also confirmed that officers did not exchange gunfire with the suspect.
Police said the suspect left through the back of the library as officers arrived. By that time, authorities had already established a perimeter, allowing them to take the suspect into custody without incident.
Officials have set up a reunification center at First Assembly Church, located at 1137 Arbutus Ave. in Chico.
Authorities said one person is in custody and there is no continuing threat to the public. First Avenue remains closed between Sheridan and Arbutus and is expected to stay shut until late Monday night as investigators continue processing the scene.
In a statement, Governor Gavin Newsom said, “Our hearts are with the Chico community tonight. We are grateful to law enforcement for their swift actions to secure the scene and take the suspect into custody. No family should have to endure a tragedy like this.”
Representative James Gallagher also released a statement, saying, “I am heartbroken by the senseless act of violence in Chico tonight and am praying for the victims, their loved ones and everyone impacted by this tragedy. Thank you to the brave law enforcement officers and other first responders who responded quickly to protect our community. Chico is strong, and we will stand together in the days ahead.”
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation, and more details are expected as authorities continue to gather information.
