A Trump International Beach Resort employee was taken into custody Saturday on accusations that she stole $6,500 in cash from a guest’s hotel room on Friday while the guest was at a soccer match, according to the Sunny Isles Beach Police Department.
Monica Latesha Peterson, 33, of Miami Gardens, was detained after detectives investigated the alleged theft at the seaside resort at 18001 Collins Ave.
According to the arrest report, the victim told officers that he left a black fanny pack with approximately $6,500 in $100 bills on a dresser inside his hotel room before departing for a soccer tournament on Friday. Argentina defeated Cape Verde in the World Cup at Miami Gardens that day.
When the guest checked the bag the next day, he discovered the cash had been stolen and reported it to the police.
Throughout the inquiry, detectives examined hotel surveillance video and employee keycard access logs. According to the arrest report, Peterson used her allocated employee keycard to enter the victim’s room around 6:11 p.m. on Friday while the guest was not present.
According to the report, investigators discovered that Peterson was not assigned to clean or serve the room as part of her work duties.
Police detained Peterson and transported her to the Sunny Isles Beach Police Department for interrogation.
According to the arrest report, Peterson waived her Miranda rights and took part in a taped interrogation during which she made some sort of admission, albeit her specific statement was redacted from the publicly available report. The report does not indicate whether any of the stolen funds were recovered.
Following the interview, Peterson was booked into Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
According to court documents, Peterson faces a grand theft accusation.
She was no longer included in the online jail database on Monday afternoon.
