A Village of Belvedere resident was taken into custody early Thursday morning when a police canine detected the presence of drugs during a car stop in Oxford.
David Keith Andrew Chanowsky, 57, was driving a white Ford Flex at 2:30 a.m. when he was stopped by a Sumter County Sheriff’s Office sergeant near U.S. 301 and County Road 104 for an expired license plate registration. Chanowsky was the sole occupant of the vehicle.
The sergeant requested assistance from the Wildwood Police Department, who sent an officer and a qualified narcotics detection dog named Mika to the area. Mika took a free-air sniff and detected the odor of drugs emanating from the vehicle.
During a later check of the Ford Flex, officers discovered a huge glass smoking pipe laying on the front passenger seat. According to the police report, the pipe included charred residue that tested positive for heroin.
The New York native was detained on a misdemeanor allegation of possessing drug equipment. He was booked into the Sumter County Detention Center and released after posting a $1,000 bond.
