Following a day of extreme heat, strong thunderstorms are expected to sweep through the city on Wednesday.
The severe thunderstorm warning has been expanded to cover the entire area. Warnings are also in force for sections of northeastern New Jersey and Nassau County, Long Island.
The warning remains in effect until 5:45 p.m. Thunderstorms can produce 70 mph wind gusts and quarter-sized hail.
Minor hail damage to cars is probable. Expect significant tree damage. Wind damage is also expected to affect mobile homes and roofs.
The storm also produces continuous cloud-to-ground lightning.
People are encouraged to stay indoors until the storm passes.
