A Fruitland Park man who allegedly told a police officer to “just take him to jail” was apprehended on multiple warrants and a suspended license charge following a traffic check near Florida’s friendliest hometown.
Kelley Bradley Nelson, 45, was driving a blue Dodge Charger on Powell Road near Brownwood around 9:30 a.m. on September 3 when a Wildwood Police Department officer pulled him over for going 52 mph in a 35 mph zone, according to an arrest report.
After the police began a traffic stop, Nelson pulled into the Brownwood Professional Plaza parking lot. Nelson instantly exited the driver’s side door and started strolling toward the back of the vehicle.
When the officer told Nelson to stay in the vehicle, Nelson allegedly told the officer to just take him to jail. When asked why, Nelson allegedly revealed his license was suspended, calling it “really bad,” and claiming he had an active warrant for his arrest for child support.
A database search revealed Nelson had five active suspensions on his Florida driver’s license dating back to December 2020, as well as a prior conviction for driving while his license was suspended outside of Lake County. The investigation also revealed Nelson had an open warrant for failure to appear and an active writ of bodily attachment, both from Lake County.
Nelson was detained on a preliminary accusation of driving with a suspended license, a second offense. He received a warning for speeding, and the Dodge Charger was left secured in the plaza parking lot at his request.
He was booked into the Sumter County Detention Center and detained without bond pending transfer to the Lake County Jail.
All charges are subject to final jail booking records, and the suspect is assumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
