Man on Bicycle Asked Driver to Hit Him Before Jumping Into Creek, Police Say

On This Post

A 36-year-old man was arrested early Tuesday morning after allegedly asking a motorist to strike him with a vehicle and later jumping his bicycle into a creek while fleeing police.

According to the Eugene Police Department, officers responded around 3:25 a.m. Tuesday to West 18th Avenue and Bailey Hill Road for a report of a suspicious person.

The caller told police that a man — later identified as Nicholas Michael Jamison — approached him on a bicycle, claimed police were after him and asked to be hit by the driver’s vehicle. The caller also reported the man had an object in his waistband that appeared to be a firearm.

When an officer attempted to contact Jamison, police said he began screaming and slamming his handlebars. The officer tried to de-escalate the situation, but Jamison rode toward oncoming traffic.

As the officer moved to arrest him for disorderly conduct, Jamison allegedly pulled an object from his waistband and held it in a manner similar to a firearm. After ignoring commands, he backed away and then rode off.

Police pursued him to the edge of the Fern Ridge Bike Path embankment, where he jumped his bicycle into a creek. He later exited the water and complied with orders to lie down.

During a search, officers found multiple knives in his possession.

Jamison was lodged at the Lane County Jail on charges of disorderly conduct and escape from custody.
