A Springfield man has been sentenced to more than 12 years in federal prison for carrying out a hate crime that left a victim seriously injured in Eugene.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Oregon, 26-year-old Daniel Andrew McGee attacked the victim because of their sexual orientation. Authorities said the assault resulted in life-threatening injuries.
U.S. Attorney Scott E. Bradford said the sentence highlights the federal government’s commitment to addressing hate crimes and protecting civil rights.
“The right to live safely in one’s community is a fundamental civil right,” Bradford said.
Investigators said McGee planned the attack weeks in advance. Court records show he used the dating app Grindr to arrange a meeting with the victim in July 2021 before assaulting them with a wooden tire thumper.
McGee pleaded guilty to the federal hate crime charge in November 2025.
The case was investigated by the FBI and the Eugene Police Department. Acting FBI Portland Special Agent in Charge Matt Torres said hate crimes harm not only victims but entire communities.
“Hate crimes impact not just individuals, but entire communities,” Torres said.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Huynh and Trial Attorney Tenette Smith prosecuted the case.
