Police in Eugene are warning residents about scammers selling fake gold jewelry in public places across the area.
According to the Eugene Police Department, at least three people in Eugene and Lane County, Oregon have been scammed over the past two weeks. Victims reported being approached by individuals offering what they claimed was genuine gold jewelry.
Investigators say the suspects are traveling in an SUV and include a man, a pregnant woman and two children. The man reportedly tells potential buyers he is from Dubai or Turkey while trying to convince them to buy the jewelry.
Authorities said the items appear authentic because they are stamped like real gold, but victims later discovered the jewelry was fake after taking it to pawn shops.
Police believe the group may be part of a wider network of traveling scammers operating across the United States. Officials are advising residents not to buy jewelry from unknown sellers and to report suspicious activity to police.
