A man from Beaverton who fatally shot his wife while under the influence of LSD has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.
Talon G. Mitchell, 23, pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter for the 2023 killing of his wife, Mona Chopheng, as part of a deal with prosecutors in Washington County.
Authorities said Mitchell sent a series of frantic messages to 911 around 10:15 p.m. on Feb. 24, 2023, claiming he was “stuck in a dream” and “being controlled.” One message read simply: “INSANITY. HELP ME.”
Officers with the Beaverton Police Department responded to the couple’s apartment and spent about 30 minutes convincing Mitchell to open the door.
When they entered, they found Chopheng, 24, dead from a shotgun wound to the face. Her body was slumped on a couch, and blood was visible on Mitchell’s shoes.
Investigators said Mitchell told them he had taken LSD the day before and did not remember firing the weapon.
Neighbors reported hearing a woman crying and a man speaking in short, abrupt sentences the night before the shooting, followed by sounds of furniture moving before the apartment went quiet.
At a hearing in the Washington County Circuit Courthouse, Judge Theodore Sims sentenced Mitchell to 20 years in prison. He was granted credit for time already served and may qualify for reduced time for good behavior during the latter half of the sentence.
