Portland airport rejects TSA request to display political video during government shutdown

On This Post

Officials at Portland International Airport have once again declined a request to display a politically themed video from the Transportation Security Administration, citing laws that prohibit the use of public resources for political messaging.

According to representatives from the Port of Portland, the agency recently asked the airport to screen a video addressing travel delays during the ongoing partial federal government shutdown.

Airport cites laws against political messaging

Port of Portland spokesperson Kara Hansen said officials denied the request because public facilities and employees cannot be used to promote or criticize political parties.

The decision marks the second time in six months the airport has refused to display a video tied to the shutdown.

Officials pointed to the Hatch Act, which limits the use of government resources for partisan messages. Oregon law also restricts public employees from engaging in political advocacy while on duty.

Video linked travel delays to political dispute

The requested video reportedly blamed Democrats for travel delays tied to the shutdown affecting the Department of Homeland Security.

The shutdown occurred after disagreements between the White House and Democratic lawmakers over funding and policy changes involving immigration enforcement.

Lawmakers had demanded additional restrictions on the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement following a fatal shooting involving ICE agents earlier this year.

TSA employees working without pay

Despite the shutdown, TSA officers continue to work because they are classified as essential employees.

However, workers have reported challenges due to delayed paychecks, which have been linked to an increase in unscheduled absences during past shutdowns.

Similar request denied last year

Airport officials previously rejected another request in October to display a similar video featuring former Kristi Noem, who also blamed Democrats for travel disruptions during a previous government shutdown.

Airport offers support for TSA workers

Although the airport declined to display the video, the Port of Portland has placed donation bins inside the main terminal to help TSA employees affected by the shutdown.

Travelers can donate nonperishable food items, household supplies and small gift cards to support workers who may be experiencing financial strain while federal funding remains unresolved.
