A woman holding her infant was allegedly attacked during a terrifying home invasion in Portland, authorities said.

The incident unfolded Sunday in the South Tabor neighborhood, where police say a man forced his way into a home and confronted the woman while she was upstairs with her children. According to investigators, she was holding her 10-month-old baby and caring for a young sibling when the suspect approached her.

Officials identified the suspect as Judson C. Defir, 43. Prosecutors allege he attacked the woman as she tried to shield her child, forcing her onto a bed while she fought back.

The victim managed to escape by asking to place the baby down, then fled to another room where she barricaded herself inside.

Authorities say Defir fled the home but was quickly pursued by neighbors and nearby churchgoers, who helped police identify him shortly after.

Police also believe the suspect approached or grabbed several other women in the area around the same time.

According to court documents, Defir later admitted to using methamphetamine earlier that day but denied assaulting anyone. He has been charged with multiple serious offenses, including attempted rape, kidnapping, burglary, and a probation violation.

Bob Day praised the swift response of officers and expressed concern for the victims affected by the incident.

A judge ordered Defir held without bail as the case proceeds. Officials say additional charges could be filed as the investigation continues.
