Two pilots were killed and dozens of people were injured after an Air Canada regional jet collided with a fire-rescue truck while landing at LaGuardia Airport late Sunday night, officials said.
Fatal Collision Details
The aircraft, operated by Jazz Aviation on behalf of Air Canada, struck a Port Authority emergency vehicle on the runway.
- Pilot and co-pilot were killed
- Around 40 passengers and crew were hospitalized, some with serious injuries
- Most injured have since been released
- Two Port Authority workers in the truck were also injured, but not seriously
The flight was arriving from Montreal with 72 passengers and four crew members onboard.
What Happened Before the Crash
Officials said the fire truck was crossing the runway to respond to a separate issue involving a United Airlines flight that reported an unusual odor.
Air traffic control audio reveals:
- The vehicle was initially cleared to cross the runway
- Controllers then urgently tried to stop it, repeatedly saying:
“Stop, Truck 1. Stop.”
The jet had already landed and was unable to avoid the vehicle.
Airport Closures and Disruptions
The crash forced a shutdown of LaGuardia, with flights diverted.
- The airport remained closed until at least 2 p.m. Monday
- Nearby Newark Liberty International Airport also experienced temporary disruptions due to a separate issue
Travel delays worsened amid the busy spring break season and ongoing staffing challenges.
Investigation Underway
The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation.
Investigators will examine:
- Air traffic control communications
- Runway procedures and safety systems
- Coordination during the emergency response
Experts say the probe will look beyond individual error to identify any systemic issues.
