A fire destroyed a detached shop building Friday evening in Tumalo, though firefighters were able to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby homes, officials said.
Fire Response and Scene
The incident occurred just after 5 p.m. on 76th Street, with multiple 911 callers reporting a visible fire near U.S. Highway 97 and Tumalo Road.
Crews from Bend Fire & Rescue responded to find:
- A detached shop fully engulfed in flames
- Fire spreading into nearby brush and trees
Additional support came from:
- Cloverdale Fire District
- Redmond Fire
Firefighters brought the blaze under control and remained at the scene into the evening.
Damage and Cause
Officials confirmed:
- The fire was accidental
- Caused by a fuel leak and vehicle backfire inside the shop
The fire destroyed:
- A 1,600-square-foot shop building
- Two classic vehicles
- A motorized scooter
A nearby travel trailer was also heavily damaged.
Estimated Losses
- Structure: $100,000
- Contents and trailer: $120,000
Homes Protected
Although the fire spread toward nearby properties, no homes were damaged thanks to firefighters’ quick response.
