PORTLAND, OR — Portland Fire & Rescue evacuated the Holiday Inn on Hayden Island Tuesday afternoon after a fire broke out in the upper floors of the building. Fire crews brought the blaze under control just before 6 p.m.
The fire was reported shortly before 12:30 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Columbia Waterfront, located at 909 North Hayden Island Drive. Initial reports indicated smoke coming from the roof. Firefighters discovered flames behind a wall extending from a third-floor room and quickly began efforts to prevent the fire from spreading.
PF&R confirmed that the fire had reached the attic, prompting a second alarm. Crews successfully knocked down the blaze within about 30 minutes and continued to check for hotspots to ensure the fire was fully extinguished. Firefighters also worked to manage a large amount of water damage from the sprinkler system and fire hoses.
Officials said the fire started during plumbing work on the second floor that involved the use of a torch. The flames then spread upward to the third floor and attic. Fortunately, the affected rooms were unoccupied at the time, and no guests were reported injured.
The extent of fire and water damage to the building and rooms has not yet been determined.
