A man convicted of shooting and killing a 21-year-old man near an Ohio primary school has received his prison sentence.
Nicko Matthews-Cooper, 24, was found guilty of many crimes, including murder and felonious assault, last month.
He has now been sentenced to life in prison with the chance of parole after 27 years, according to our Columbus-based news partners at WBNS.
This all stemmed from a gunshot in December 2024.
Deputies from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office discovered Kaelan Amerson, 21, who had been shot many times, in Jefferson Township. He was brought to a Columbus hospital and pronounced dead.
According to detectives, Amerson and four others were involved in an alleged drug transaction at Licking Heights West Elementary School. They claimed Matthews-Cooper attempted to rob Amerson after the transaction and shot into the vehicle he was driving.
According to WBNS, Amerson was injured in the upper torso but drove away from the scene.
Two more persons were shot, but only received minor injuries.
A jury found Matthews-Cooper not guilty of aggravated robbery or aggravated murder.
