A woman in Douglas County, Oregon is facing criminal charges after authorities say she took several young puppies and their mother from a camp near Roseburg, Oregon.

According to investigators, Kayla Jones has been charged with eight counts of first-degree theft in connection with the incident.

Puppies reported missing

Police said the dog owner discovered the animals missing after returning from a nearby soup kitchen. The owner reported that her blue heeler named Oreo and seven puppies, just 12 days old, had disappeared.

Authorities noted that the puppies had not yet opened their eyes. The owner told officers she had left the animals with food, water and a propane heater to keep them warm.

Argument leads to investigation

During the investigation, officers learned of a nearby disturbance reported to emergency dispatch involving an argument between Jones and her boyfriend related to the dogs.

Police later recovered the animals and returned them to their owner.

Suspect claims she wanted to help

Jones was arrested after the dogs were located. According to police, she told officers she believed she was helping the puppies.

The case remains under investigation.
