Study in Southwest Bend could revive proposal for Deschutes River bridge

On This Post

A new study launched by the Bend Park & Recreation District could revive discussions about building a bridge over the Deschutes River in southwest Bend, Oregon.

The study will examine ways to close remaining gaps in the Deschutes River Trail, which stretches between Sunriver and Tumalo State Park. Officials say one possible solution could include constructing a long-discussed bridge linking southwest Bend to the Cascade Lakes Highway corridor.

Study to evaluate multiple options

District planners say the project is intended to analyze potential routes that would connect the trail to recreation areas within the Deschutes National Forest, particularly near Century Drive and the Cascade Lakes Highway.

The effort continues earlier planning work conducted between 2015 and 2019. The new study will examine updated data and community changes over the past decade.

According to district principal planner Henry Stroud, the goal is to provide clearer information to guide future discussions and possible design plans.

Researchers will review factors such as potential trail routes, river width, environmental impacts, engineering feasibility and federal or state land regulations.

Consulting firm leading the analysis

The transportation planning firm Kittelson & Associates has been hired to conduct the study. A stakeholder advisory group will meet several times during the process to review findings and discuss options.

Among the possibilities being considered are new trail connections that may require a bridge crossing over the Deschutes River. Planners will also evaluate a “no-build” option, which would rely on existing or soon-to-be-constructed trails and roadways.

Public open house scheduled

Community members will have an opportunity to learn about the project and share feedback during an open house scheduled for early April.

When: April 2, 2026, from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
Where: Elk Meadows Elementary School gymnasium

The drop-in event will allow residents to discuss topics such as trail connectivity, accessibility, traffic concerns and environmental considerations. An online version of the open house will also be available from April 2 through April 23 on the district’s project website.

Officials say public input will help shape future decisions about completing one of the final missing segments of the Deschutes River Trail.
