Bend’s long-awaited Central Library opening date announced; drive-thru service next week

The new Central Library in Bend is set to officially open its doors to the public on May 11, 2026, marking a major milestone for the region’s growing library system.

Ahead of the grand opening, the Deschutes Public Library will launch a drive-thru service for hold pickups and returns starting March 23. The facility is located on Southeast Santorini Street near SE 27th Street, close to the expanding Stevens Ranch area.

Library officials say the new building—spanning nearly 100,000 square feet across three floors—is designed to meet the needs of a rapidly growing community. Staff will spend the coming weeks preparing the space and undergoing training to ensure a smooth launch.

The modern library will include a wide range of features, such as study and meeting rooms, a large community space, a children’s interactive learning area, and dedicated zones for adult collections. Visitors will also have access to co-working spaces, a MakerSpace for creative projects, and public computers.

In a first for libraries in the county, the facility will also feature a café operated by Thump Coffee, offering visitors a place to relax while using library services.

Sustainability is a key highlight of the project. The building has been designed to meet LEED Platinum standards, operating as an all-electric and energy-efficient facility aimed at reducing environmental impact.

The new Central Library is part of a broader expansion effort approved by voters in 2020 to upgrade and modernize library services across the county, including renovations and new construction in nearby communities.

With expanded resources, improved accessibility, and modern amenities, officials say the Central Library will play a vital role in supporting education, collaboration, and community engagement in the years ahead.
