A 29-year-old man has been sentenced to more than 12 years in prison for fatally shooting his twin brother during a confrontation outside a Portland motel in 2022, officials said.
Martre Oliver received a 150-month prison sentence after being convicted of first-degree manslaughter, unlawful use of a weapon, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. A jury found him not guilty of second-degree murder.
The shooting occurred around 3 a.m. on September 22, 2022, outside the now-closed Howard Johnson motel near Northeast 82nd Avenue and Sandy Boulevard.
According to the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office, surveillance footage showed a blue SUV arriving at the scene, with two individuals exiting the vehicle. The pair—later identified as Martre and his twin brother Martese Oliver—were seen arguing and physically fighting near the car.
Authorities said the video captured Martese striking Martre, causing him to fall. Moments later, as Martese approached him, multiple gunshots were fired.
Emergency responders later found Martese with fatal gunshot wounds, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators identified Martre through the footage, and he was later arrested in Renton by the U.S. Marshals Service.
Prosecutors described the incident as a tragic escalation of a family dispute. Senior Deputy District Attorney Kristen Kyle-Castelli stated that the fatal outcome was unnecessary and emphasized that justice had been served for the victim.
