An Oregon couple has filed a lawsuit against an Alaska dogsled tour operator, alleging they were injured during an accident on a guided excursion in 2024.
Randall Hall and Philippa Hall submitted their complaint in Fairbanks Superior Court against Trail Breaker Kennel, a company originally established by Iditarod champion Susan Butcher.
Incident Details
According to court filings, the couple was riding in a sled basket when their dogsled struck an obstacle along or near the trail, causing it to flip and throw them to the ground.
The lawsuit claims the accident resulted from negligence by the kennel and its staff, leading to injuries that required medical care and may have long-term consequences. However, specific details about the injuries were not disclosed.
Legal Claims
The Halls are seeking unspecified financial compensation, with the final amount to be determined during trial proceedings.
Their attorney, Douglas Johnson, has not provided additional comments regarding the case.
Timing and Response
Under Alaska law, personal injury claims must be filed within two years. The lawsuit was submitted just 11 days before that deadline.
Tekla Monson, who now owns the kennel and is the daughter of Susan Butcher, acknowledged awareness of the 2024 incident but said she had not been informed about the lawsuit prior to media inquiries. She declined to comment further.
