A driver in Eugene is facing multiple criminal charges after allegedly driving dangerously, nearly striking a pedestrian, and leading police on a pursuit, authorities said.
Near-Miss at Busy Intersection
According to the Eugene Police Department, the incident occurred on March 24 around 3:29 p.m. near West 7th Avenue and Garfield Street.
An officer observed a Toyota Camry accelerating unpredictably, skidding its tires and stopping abruptly at a red light. When the signal turned green, the driver reportedly sped forward while a pedestrian was crossing, narrowly avoiding a collision.
Erratic Driving and Police Pursuit
Police said the vehicle continued eastbound on West 7th Avenue, drifting within lanes and nearly hitting another vehicle stopped in traffic. When officers attempted a traffic stop, the driver allegedly failed to comply, prompting a short pursuit.
The car was seen swerving and spinning its tires as officers activated lights and sirens.
Driver Taken Into Custody
The driver, identified as 27-year-old Francisco Cristobal Manuel, eventually stopped near West 5th Avenue and Polk Street. Officers detained him after he did not immediately follow commands.
A 49-year-old passenger, who told police he had been picked up earlier along Highway 99, was also briefly detained during the incident.
Multiple Charges Filed
Following the investigation, Manuel was arrested on several charges, including:
- Eluding police by vehicle
