Eugene Weekly Embezzlement Case: Springfield Woman Pleads Guilty to Theft Charges

On This Post

A Springfield woman has admitted to stealing more than $100,000 from the Eugene Weekly, a case that once forced the publication to temporarily shut down operations.

Elisha Joe Young, 38, entered a guilty plea Tuesday in Lane County Circuit Court, bringing a major development in the high-profile embezzlement case. Young previously worked as the newspaper’s business manager.

Theft Led to Financial Crisis

Prosecutors said Young misappropriated funds and failed to pay essential bills, causing severe financial strain on the publication. As a result, the entire staff was laid off in December 2023, and the paper halted printing.

The community later stepped in with crowdfunding efforts, helping revive the publication and allowing it to resume operations.

Extradition and Legal Proceedings

During the investigation, Young left Oregon and traveled to Ohio. After initial delays, she was eventually extradited back to Oregon and booked into the Lane County Jail in June 2025.

Her trial had been scheduled for May 2026, but it has now been canceled following the plea agreement. Officials have not yet announced a sentencing date.

Case Impact

The case drew widespread attention across Oregon, highlighting the vulnerability of local media organizations and the importance of community support in sustaining independent journalism.
