A disturbing discovery of what appeared to be dead dogs washing ashore on Guemes Island has been resolved, with authorities confirming the animals were actually foxes used in commercial fishing operations.
The Skagit County Sheriff’s Office announced that nearly two dozen carcasses found along the island’s shoreline were initially believed to be canines, prompting an investigation by animal control officials.
Investigation Reveals Surprising Source
After collecting and examining the remains, investigators determined the animals were foxes sourced from a farm outside Washington. Authorities say the animals had been legally purchased and transported to the area.
According to officials, the foxes were skinned and were allegedly intended for use as bait in commercial crabbing operations.
Person Identified, Cooperating with Authorities
The sheriff’s office confirmed that the individual connected to the incident has been identified and is cooperating with investigators. While the case remains under review, officials do not expect criminal charges to be filed.
Public Concern Sparked by Discovery
The unusual sight of animal remains washing ashore raised alarm among residents and led to widespread concern before the true nature of the animals was confirmed.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation but emphasize that the incident appears to be tied to lawful commercial fishing practices.
