Police in Nevada have launched an investigation after discovering two people, including a child, dead at a regional airport.

In an April 13 Facebook statement, the Elko Police Department said officers were “investigating a crime scene” at Elko Regional Airport.

The airport is located in Elko County in northeastern Nevada.

“All flights are currently canceled until further notice,” the airport stated on social media without providing additional details. “We appreciate your patience and understanding as updates become available. Please continue to check back here for the latest information.”

Man, child found dead at Elko airport

It was not immediately clear whether the airport reopened on April 14 or what caused the deaths of the two individuals. However, local news station KUTV reported that police received calls about an active shooter around 12:30 p.m. on April 13.

Police Lieutenant Shane Daz told ABC4 that officers discovered a man inside the airport terminal with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. They later located a minor in an airport bathroom who had also suffered a gunshot wound. The outlet reported that emergency crews transported the minor to a hospital, where they were later pronounced dead. According to police, investigators believe the man allegedly shot the juvenile before turning the weapon on himself.

The victims’ identities were not immediately known.

“This is a tragic incident. Anyone who is dealing with mental health problems, we urge you to please reach out and get help,” Daz told ABC4.
