EUGENE, Ore. — A Eugene man has been sentenced to 18 months in prison after threatening multiple people with a shotgun during a daytime incident that prompted emergency calls and a police shooting, authorities said.
Tyler James Johnson was convicted of unlawful use of a weapon and menacing following the November 12, 2025 incident on North Polk Street.
Shotgun Threat Sparks Emergency Response
According to prosecutors, Johnson was seen pointing a short-barreled 12-gauge shotgun at drivers and at least one pedestrian, leading multiple people to call 911.
Officers from the Eugene Police Department responded quickly to the scene, where Johnson reportedly ignored repeated commands to drop the weapon.
Officer-Involved Shooting Near Local Businesses
Authorities said Johnson continued walking toward nearby locations, including Oakshire Brewing and Wandering Goat Coffee, while still armed.
Police say the situation escalated when Johnson pointed the shotgun at Officer Will Stutesman, prompting the officer to open fire.
Johnson was shot during the encounter and taken into custody. Officers later recovered the shotgun, which had a live round in the chamber.
Use of Force Deemed Justified
The Lane County Interagency Deadly Force Investigation Team reviewed the officer-involved shooting.
Lane County District Attorney Christopher Parosa determined that Officer Stutesman’s use of deadly force was legally justified, citing the immediate threat posed to both law enforcement and civilians nearby.
Sentence and Supervision
In addition to the 18-month prison sentence, Johnson will serve three years of post-prison supervision upon release.
Investigation Concluded
Officials say the case underscores the rapid response of law enforcement and the seriousness of threats involving firearms in public spaces.
