A 34-year-old man from Salem has been sentenced to 16 years in prison after pleading guilty to multiple charges, including manslaughter, sexual abuse and driving under the influence, in connection with a deadly crash and a separate incident involving minors.
High-Speed Crash Kills 16-Year-Old Girl
According to the Marion County District Attorney’s Office, Christopher Jordan Atkinson was driving a Mercedes sedan on Fern Ridge Road SE in March 2025 with four underage passengers.
Authorities say Atkinson lost control of the vehicle while driving at speeds nearing 100 mph. The car veered off the road and flipped, resulting in the death of a 16-year-old girl seated in the back.
A 12-year-old passenger also suffered serious injuries in the crash.
Alcohol and Drugs Involved
Investigators determined that both Atkinson and the minors in the vehicle had been consuming alcohol and marijuana prior to the crash. Officials described the incident as entirely preventable.
Separate Sexual Abuse Incident Involving Minor
In addition to the crash, Atkinson was also convicted of second-degree sexual abuse stemming from an earlier incident the same month.
Prosecutors said he rented a hotel room, provided alcohol to minors, and engaged in inappropriate sexual conduct with a 16-year-old who was under the influence.
Prosecutors Call Case ‘Heartbreaking’
Chief Deputy District Attorney Brendan Murphy said the case highlights the severe consequences of reckless and illegal behavior.
“This was a heartbreaking and entirely preventable tragedy,” Murphy said, emphasizing the loss of a young life due to the defendant’s actions.
Accountability and Sentencing
Atkinson pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including manslaughter, DUI and sexual abuse. The court sentenced him to 16 years in prison.
Ongoing Reminder of Risks
The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of impaired and reckless driving, especially when combined with illegal conduct involving minors. Authorities continue to stress the importance of responsible behavior to prevent similar tragedies.
