“Prolific” Portland Burglar Sentenced to 5 Years After String of Break-Ins

On This Post

A repeat offender behind a series of business burglaries across Portland has been sentenced to five years in prison, prosecutors announced Tuesday, calling the case a win for local law enforcement efforts.

Brandon Lee Hellard, 47, pleaded guilty to multiple break-ins targeting businesses in Southeast Portland, including Mary Jane’s House of Glass, Thirsty Portland liquor store, Cloud Cap Games & Puzzles, and a storage unit. The crimes took place between August and January.

According to the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office, Hellard admitted to four counts of burglary — entering businesses with the intent to steal — while additional theft charges were dropped as part of the plea agreement.

Prosecutors said Hellard stole at least $3,100 worth of goods during the crime spree. He also pleaded guilty to aggravated theft and acknowledged stealing a commercial vehicle in 2024.

Authorities linked Hellard to multiple incidents after identifying him in a smash-and-grab burglary at Mary Jane’s House of Glass on Southeast Division Street last November. That case prompted a public appeal for help, ultimately leading investigators to connect him to other break-ins in the area.

“This case highlights the vital partnership between our community and the burglary task force,” said Deputy District Attorney Alex Garcia.

The multi-agency task force, launched last year, focuses on dismantling organized burglary rings responsible for a surge in property crimes across the Portland metro area.

Hellard’s attorney has not publicly commented on the sentencing.
