A former Texas congressional candidate was taken into custody on charges relating to an alleged domestic violence situation.

Brett Jensen, a candidate for Texas’ 8th Congressional District, was arrested Sunday night and charged with assault-family violence involving obstructing respiration, according to Harris County court records.

According to law enforcement officials, deputies from the Harris County Precinct 4 Constable’s Office were dispatched to Houston Methodist Hospital in The Woodlands.

Jensen’s wife allegedly told detectives in the hospital that he slapped and strangled her. According to court documents, she stated that this was not the first time it had occurred.

According to a law enforcement source, Jensen informed hospital workers that his wife was hurt after falling at a party while intoxicated.

“He’s absolutely not guilty. Brent Mayr, Jensen’s defense attorney, told KPRC 2’s Bryce Newberry, “He is completely innocent of these allegations, and I will be appearing in court with him to defend him against these charges.”

Jensen is set to appear in probable cause court Monday evening.

Jensen’s campaign website identifies him as a “lifelong conservative” and devoted father of a 6-year-old daughter.

In March, he lost the Republican primary for Texas House District 8 to Jessica Steinmann. Jensen came in second place, receiving 12.7% of the votes.

District 8 encompasses portions of many Houston counties, including Montgomery, Walker, San Jacinto, Liberty, Polk, and Trinity.
