A Houston man has been sentenced to 50 years in prison in connection with a 2024 kidnapping that ended with an exchange of gunfire with Bryan police, according to a press release from the Brazos County District Attorney’s Office.
According to prosecutors, Kevin Henriquez was sentenced on May 13, 2026, after previously pleading guilty to aggravated kidnapping and aggravated assault on a public official. According to the DA’s office, the possible punishments in the case ranged from probation to life imprisonment.
The DA’s office stated that the case began on August 31, 2024, when Henriquez assaulted his fiancée in front of her friends at a neighborhood club. According to the announcement, bouncers assisted the victim in fleeing, but prosecutors allege Henriquez later tracked her down and threatened to murder her if she did not accompany him.
According to the DA’s office, the victim entered Henriquez’s vehicle because she suspected he had a firearm. Henriquez drove her to her apartment complex on South Ennis Street, where she tried to flee but was apprehended and held at gunpoint.
Multiple officers responded and started looking for Henriquez and the victim.
Bryan Police Officer Caleb Thomas discovered him holding the victim at gunpoint in a breezeway of the apartment building and told him to drop the weapon.
Instead, prosecutors claimed Henriquez fired at Thomas from close range, leading the officer to return fire. Henriquez was injured, but the victim escaped harm.
Following the exchange of gunfire, Henriquez fled in a vehicle but was quickly apprehended by other Bryan police officers.
A gunshot fragment struck Officer Thomas, causing a slight injury.
“We want to recognize the exceptional bravery and professionalism of the Bryan Police Department,” said Asst. District Attorney Kevin Capps. “Officer Thomas acted heroically, risking his own life to save the victim.”
