The Chula Vista Police Department (CVPD) announced that a student from Rancho Del Rey Middle School was arrested Thursday afternoon after allegedly bringing a gun to campus and concealing it in a bush.

According to CVPD, at about 10:50 a.m. on Thursday, police school resource officers responded to a report that middle school staff discovered an unspent round of ammunition on campus. The school is located on East J Street in Chula Vista.

Officers and staff immediately began investigating the situation.

They interviewed numerous children and discovered that one had allegedly been spotted dumping a thing along the school’s fence line. After learning this, officials placed the middle school on Secure Campus status and searched the vicinity.

Officers reportedly discovered a handgun concealed beneath a bush along the school’s fence line. The gun had no serial number and was discovered with an empty magazine. An extra round of ammo was also discovered nearby, according to CVPD.

One student was reportedly arrested for allegedly bringing a pistol onto school grounds. Because the pupil is a child, authorities are not disclosing any further details about their identification.

“My daughter told my wife that someone had taken a pistol to school. And there were a few arrests, including one with a weapon. “You know, we just had the mosque shooting, and there’s been all this crazy stuff going on,” said a father whose daughter attends the middle school.

“The least [they] can do as the school, the principal, or the employees of the school is somebody has to reach out, send out an email, a text message, or a call, or something—but we didn’t receive any notice,” the parent said.

The CVPD said there is no ongoing threat from the incident. Law enforcement applauds the children and staff for swiftly reporting the information.

The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with knowledge about the event is encouraged to call the San Diego Crime Stoppers confidential tip line at (888) 580-8477.
