The man accused of fatally shooting a Loyola University student on a North Side beach in March was captured with a weapon while in custody, according to police.

The Cook County Sheriff’s Office reported that about 8 a.m. Thursday, Cook County Jail staff discovered Jose Medina in possession of a 6-inch shank.

Correctional authorities searched the 26-year-old and found a sharpened piece of metal with a handle made of medical tape in his jeans pocket, according to the sheriff’s office.

Medina has been in detention since March 23. He is accused of fatally shooting Sheridan Gorman, 18, on March 19 at Tobey Prinz Beach in Rogers Park.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, the Venezuelan national entered the United States unlawfully in 2023.

The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office approved a new felony charge of possession of contraband in a penal institution against Medina on Friday.

Medina has pleaded not guilty to charges in Gorman’s killing. His next court date is June 1.
