The man detained following a gunshot involving state police on a Las Vegas roadway has now been charged with second-degree murder.

According to court records, the Clark County District Attorney’s Office filed a formal criminal complaint over the weekend charging Sean Shirazi, 45, with the aggravated felony.

The complaint claims that Shirazi is directly responsible for his passenger’s death, “without any intent to do so, in the commission of an unlawful act and in the prosecution of a felonious intent.”

He previously faced a charge of involuntary manslaughter.

According to Nevada State Police, Shirazi attempted to drive his SUV through a crash site on Interstate 11/U.S. 95 in downtown Las Vegas on Wednesday, June 10.

According to the arrest report, after reportedly disregarding an officer’s commands to stop, he accelerated his SUV, striking and pinning the trooper between his vehicle and a nearby fire engine.

Investigators reported that when wedged between the two trucks, the trooper fired five bullets. Shirazi allegedly continued driving ahead, forcing the trooper to fire another bullet before fleeing the scene.

Shirazi and his SUV were eventually discovered by authorities at Dignity Health Hospital, located at Sahara Avenue and Decatur Boulevard, and he was arrested. According to investigators, a female passenger whom Shirazi claimed to have picked up earlier that day received a gunshot wound to the left side of her rib cage and died as a result of the injuries.

The woman was identified as Corinne Barnes, 40, by the Clark County Coroner’s Office.

Shirazi admitting to snorting meth before the event and being terrified because he thought law enforcement officers were looking for him, according to the report.

Shirazi is also accused of seven more criminal offenses in the complaint. His first court appearance is set on Tuesday morning.
