A habitual traffic offender from Inverness was taken into custody in the southern part of The Villages after a police officer saw his expired license plate.

James Edward Borton, 48, of Inverness, was driving a blue Dodge Ram pickup just before 8 a.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Corbin Trail and LaGrange Loop in the Village of LaGrange when a Wildwood police officer noted the vehicle’s tag had expired in December 2025.

During the traffic stop, Borton handed the officer a Florida identification card and admitted to not having a valid driver’s license. He also failed to show proof of motor vehicle liability insurance for the truck.

A search of Borton’s driving records found that his license was initially canceled in April 2024 due to a driving under the influence conviction. He was categorized as a habitual traffic violator the next month, resulting in a 60-month penalty.

His extensive record included repeated indefinite suspensions for failing to pay court financial responsibilities and traffic penalties, as well as a recent arrest by the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office for driving with a suspended license on May 1.

Borton was arrested on charges of driving with a suspended or revoked license and failing to maintain liability insurance. He also received a ticket for the expired tag.

He was detained at the Sumter County Jail and held without bond. In addition to the new accusations, he was wanted on many warrants charging him with failure to appear.
