A 17-year-old male and a 20-year-old woman are facing child endangerment charges after it was found a child was exposed to severe conditions, including feces, bug bites, and gasoline, Harris County court records show.
According to court documents obtained by ABC13, the teenager, Drake Fernandez, and the woman, Tannis Harrington, were arrested on Saturday night and charged with felony child endangerment.
According to the records, the child was subjected to harsh conditions, such as inhaling “feces, urine, rotten food, insects, and gasoline.”
The defendants also allowed the child to be bitten by “possibly disease-carrying insects,” according to court records, and they ingested marijuana and alcohol while caring for the infant, as well as failing to provide basic hygiene.
According to the records, the child’s illnesses were so bad that he needed two decontamination baths before being treated by hospital officials.
Fernandez and Harrington are also charged with animal cruelty for allegedly failing to provide clean water, food, or proper hygiene to a dog in their control and confining it in a “cruel manner,” according to court papers.
The link between the two suspects, as well as their relationship with the child, is unknown at this time.
ABC13 spoke a neighbor who requested anonymity and reported seeing police enforcement at the condominium on Saturday. We observed cops and a male being arrested,” the neighbor added. “There are typically three patrols and one ambulance. We see cops, not just ambulances. So it made us worried yesterday.”
Eyewitness News requested the Harris County Sheriff’s Office for more information on the suspects’ relationship with the youngster, as well as what caused law enforcement to intervene. We’re waiting to hear back.
