Authorities say the body of a missing person was discovered Saturday during a grid search in southern Iowa.

The Davis County Sheriff’s Office said that on Saturday afternoon, a search and rescue team was conducting a grid search for a missing person in rural David County when they discovered a deceased male subject.

Authorities said the person was definitively recognized as 76-year-old Alvin Haines, who was reported missing on June 25th. When Haines was reported missing, authorities revealed that he had dementia and had left his home without informing his family members.

“The Davis County Sheriff’s Office wishes to express its sympathies to Alvin Haines’ family and loved ones during this sad time. The Sheriff’s Office would also like to thank everyone who helped in any way in the search for Mr. Haines,” said a sheriff’s office post.

According to authorities, the search began on Friday and included GPS, drones, and a volunteer search party operating on a grid system. Officials said the search encompassed hundreds of acres.

According to the sheriff’s office, the body has been transferred to the State Medical Examiner for determination of the cause and manner of death.
