A Bloomington man was taken into custody Wednesday in Indianapolis on attempted murder charges after police say he shot seven to eight rounds into a white GMC SUV carrying three adults and four children last month before leaving the scene.

According to a news release issued Thursday by the Bloomington Police Department, members of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department’s special weapons and tactics team arrested Kafern P. Johnson, 32, near the intersection of West 84th Street and Allison Avenue in Indianapolis without incident.

The arrest occurred more than two weeks after the June 23 shooting in the 1000 block of North Summit Street. That is in Bloomington’s residential neighborhood near Crestmont Park.

Monroe County Central Emergency Dispatch received 911 calls at 7:41 p.m. on June 23, reporting shooting in the vicinity.

Responding patrol officers and investigators concluded that Johnson had fired into the SUV after a verbal altercation with the driver. According to police, the altercation centered on a romance.

Despite the large number of individuals inside the truck, there were no reported injuries.

Following his arrest, Johnson was brought to an IMPD facility for questioning before being lodged into Marion County Jail. On Thursday morning, he was booked into the Monroe County jail.

According to the announcement, Johnson could face felony charges including attempted murder, criminal carelessness with a firearm, and pointing a firearm. Online court records show that no formal charges have been filed yet.

Bloomington police have encouraged anyone with more information to call 812-349-3324.
