A Summerfield man riding a moped was detained on U.S. 301 after a traffic stop discovered he had a suspended driver’s license from North Carolina and did not have the necessary motorcycle endorsement.
Larry Jay Hawkins, 32, was driving a white and blue 150cc moped northbound on U.S. 301 near County Road 462 in Wildwood around 5:13 p.m. Wednesday, July 8. A sergeant from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office noted the rider was not wearing proper eye protection, as required by Florida law, and began a traffic stop near the intersection of County Road 105.
When asked for his driver’s license, Hawkins showed a North Carolina identity card. He informed the sergeant that he had never received a Florida driver’s license and that his North Carolina license had expired. A further record check revealed that his out-of-state license was officially suspended.
Furthermore, the vehicle’s registration revealed that the moped had a 150cc engine, which required a valid motorcycle endorsement to operate legally on Florida roads. Hawkins said he didn’t have the necessary endorsement.
Hawkins was arrested on misdemeanor accusations of driving while suspended and riding a motorcycle without a license. He was booked into Sumter County Detention Center and released after posting a $650 bond.
