90-year-old San Diego man dies after suffering medical emergency while driving on I-5

A 90-year-old San Diego man died on Monday after suffering a medical emergency that resulted in an accident on northbound Interstate 5.

Around 12:25 p.m., the 90-year-old man, whose name has been withheld pending family notification, was driving a Ford pickup truck northbound on I-5, just north of Palm Avenue.

According to the California Highway Patrol, he came to a stop in the number two lane of the highway after appearing to have suffered a medical episode, for circumstances that are still being investigated.

A Toyota pickup truck driven by a 25-year-old woman collided with the Ford, according to the CHP. No one was injured as a result of the incident.

Following the crash, the 90-year-old man was transported to a local hospital and pronounced dead.

The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office will investigate if alcohol and/or drugs were involved in the crash. Meanwhile, the cause and sequence of events are being probed by the CHP.
