Tampa Traffic Alert: Major Two-Year Detour Begins Near Selmon Expressway Next Week

TAMPA, Fla. , Starting as early as Tuesday, October 20, drivers traveling through downtown Tampa will face a major detour while crews begin work beneath the Selmon Expressway.

Weather permitting, the detour will reshape the intersection cluster that links East Brorein Street, South Tampa Street, and South Franklin Street for roughly two years. The long‑term closures are essential so construction teams can safely reach the overhead expressway and build new inside travel lanes.

Under the new layout, the S‑curve on South Tampa Street beneath the expressway will close completely. To keep South Franklin Street accessible, crews will convert the leftmost lane of East Brorein Street into a two‑way traffic lane.

The adjustment also changes turn options at nearby intersections. The single southbound through lane on South Tampa Street across East Brorein Street will become a left‑turn‑only lane onto Brorein.

From there, the leftmost lane of East Brorein Street will be restriped as an eastbound right‑turn‑only lane. Workers will set up portable lane separators and six‑inch yellow temporary fencing to divide the lanes and protect the work zone.

Further east, the leftmost lane of East Brorein Street between South Morgan Street and South Florida Avenue will stay closed for the project’s duration. Barricades and directional signs will guide commuters through the altered routes.

Officials with the South Selmon Capacity Project said representatives and public‑information officers are ready to meet with anyone who wants a detailed review of the changes.

“We’d welcome the chance to sit down with you and members of the SSCP project team and Public Information Officer to go over this traffic change in more detail,” the team announced. “If you’d like to schedule a meeting, or if you have any questions, please reach out at any time.”

Transportation officials advise drivers to add extra travel time to their daily commutes and to follow all posted work‑zone signage as the two‑year traffic shift gets underway.
