A Columbia County woman has been sentenced to nearly four years in prison for possessing stolen mail and identity fraud, the United States Department of Justice announced Thursday.
Jessica Rae Mabli, 31, of Evans, was sentenced to 45 months in prison and a $2,000 fine, with three years of supervised release after pleading guilty to Possession of Stolen Mail, Aggravated Identity Theft, and Fraudulent Use of Unauthorized Access Devices.
According to court documents and testimony, Mabli was seen stealing mail in Burke County in July 2024, and a witness reported it to law enforcement.
A neighboring Burke County Sheriff’s Office deputy initiated a traffic stop based on the witness’s description of the car. The deputy pulled Mabli over after noticing her throwing mail outside her vehicle. A search of the defendant’s car revealed more than 200 pieces of mail from Burke, Columbia, and Richmond counties that were not addressed to the defendant. Multiple things from retail outlets, as well as credit card purchase receipts that the victims did not authorize, were apparently retrieved.
“The actions of this defendant not only impacted the victims in and around Augusta, but also undermined the integrity of our financial systems,” said U.S. Attorney Margaret Heap. “Let this case serve as a reminder that crime does not pay, and that we will do whatever we can to serve justice and safeguard our communities.”
“This sentencing is a statement that mail theft will not be tolerated, and the perpetrators will be brought to justice,” said Rodney M. Hopkins, Inspector in Charge of the Atlanta Division. “The Postal Inspection Service will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to pursue criminals who victimize postal customers.”
The US Postal Inspection Service, Burke County Sheriff’s Office, and Richmond County Sheriff’s Office all conducted investigations into this case.
