Drug Packages Of Unknown Origin Found On Florida Keys Shoreline

On Friday evening, local residents discovered a package of suspected narcotics that had washed ashore on a Florida Keys beach. The bundle was found around 5:45 p.m. near Mile Marker 76, as reported by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. Investigators described the package as approximately the size of a “brick,” a term commonly equivalent to one kilogram.

Deputies secured the item at the scene and transferred it to the U.S. Border Patrol for further investigation and testing. Authorities did not immediately release additional details regarding the package’s contents.

The discovery of jettisoned narcotics along Florida Keys beaches represents a recurring pattern in the region. Due to the island chain’s close proximity to Caribbean shipping lanes and maritime transit routes frequently used by smugglers, narcotic packages regularly become adrift in coastal currents and eventually reach shorelines.

In numerous past incidents, beachgoers, divers, and boaters have recovered bundles ranging from single bricks to multi-kilogram bales containing dozens of pounds of cocaine.

Smugglers frequently discard such cargo into open water to evade law enforcement interdictions, or lose bundles during severe weather events, allowing them to drift onto area beaches. Federal and local agencies consistently urge the public to refrain from handling these packages and to contact law enforcement immediately upon discovery.
